ReviewReviewReviewThe English Version of "Shackles" ( Belenggu) Jun 20, '08 11:00 AM

Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author:Armijn Pane
Have you ever listened to your inner voice? If yes, how does it affect your mind?. Have you ever spoken to your inner voice, and questioned whether your acts are right already?. People say that you've got to listen to your inner voice, but don't let it control you, what do you think?. I have ever heard "Your ego is your biggest enemy."

Not necessarily your own inner voice that you hear, yet others' ? Some important people in your heart.

And what about your past? How would you cope with your difficult paths of life? Will they haunt you and affect your acts now? People live; they meet new people- starting as just acquaintances, then go to the next level as friends, then you know what's the next level, I mean. After some years, a good-bye is something you have to try to endure. The questions are; "Will you recognize me when we pass by somewhere at a shop or some boutiques?", "Will you even remember my name?".

Which do you care the most ?

a. What people think about you?
b. What you feel is comfortable for you?

Are you the one who is concern about your custom; traditional values that you believe you have to hold in order to be accepted in a society.

Mr. Pane introduces mainly only three main characters;
1. "Dr. Soekartono" as a young intelligent doctor who regulary talks with his inner voice as a result of his dark-side-of-the-moon years. He is married to a popular and self-sufficient lady.

2. Tini as a self-sufficient young lady who is married to Dr. Soekartono, yet the marriage life is often filled by discord.

3. Yah. I'd say she is the "bridge" between Tini and Dr. Soekartono, yet her presence is also a threat. She embodies everything Dr. Soekartono admire in a woman ( at that time; 1932)

I know, there have been many questions going on around here. I mean, Mr. Pane really gives me a lot of complex questions about myself, people around me, and most of all about my life. It seems like you're having an acid test. Then when you pass, your lecturers will proudly say :

" Ah now, you go walk out that door of your childish room as you are now allowed to enter the room that has a label "Maturity." And please never look back."

I think we have been shackled. Now, it depends on you how to tear the shackles off!. This novel is highly recommended for those who like questioning so many things in life, just like all the questions I wrote above:D or perhaps you like a thought-provoking novel? This might be the choice.

Happy reading, friends!

Addendum:
1. "Shackles" written by Indonesian novelist. Armijn Pane, in 1932.
2. The book I just read is translated by a lecturer at a university in the USA.
3. "Dr", followed by a name as in "Dr. Soekartono", denotes a medical degree that someone holds. "Dr." is an abbreviation of "Dokter", which means "Doctor" in English.
4. Unike western part of the countries, Indonesia uses first name after an academic degree. Most of Indonesians, do not even have family names. Some of them even hold only one name; no middle name, or last name.
5.This novel has been used by foreign students as a referencee of Indonesian literature.

And finally, I found the English version of this novel as I had been searching for it years and years.

Blog EntryPoetry Wednesday - Time XXIJun 11, '08 1:51 AM
for everyone

Please allow me to share one of Khalil Gibran's poems!. I am not that familiar with his poems, yet I read one of his works "The Prophet" - click there to read my review.

Time XXI

And an astronomer said, "Master, what of Time?"

And he answered:

You would measure time the measureless and the immeasurable.

You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons.

Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing.

Yet the timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness,

And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream.

And that that which sings and contemplates in you is still dwelling within the bounds of that first moment which scattered the stars into space.

Who among you does not feel that his power to love is boundless?

And yet who does not feel that very love, though boundless, encompassed within the centre of his being, and moving not form love thought to love thought, nor from love deeds to other love deeds?

And is not time even as love is, undivided and paceless?

But if in you thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons,

And let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing.

Khalil Gibran

To me, his poems and works are always touching my deepest thoughts. I'd say his writings are beautifully written, yet easily understood; this is why I like his writings. " Time XXI" ; I am asking you, "Why does time fly high so fast?" . Enjoy your day there! and thanks for reading the power of speech written by Khalil Gibran.

ReviewReviewReviewReviewThe Painted VeilJun 9, '08 2:36 AM

Category:Movies
Genre: Romance
There are indeed lots of movies I have watched; either Indonesian or foreign ones.Yet, I seldom put up movies on my reviews if they do not leave any impressions to me at all.

"The Painted Veil" is one of the most endearing romance movies ever. It is based on the novel of Somerset Maugham. Taking a set mostly in Shanghai and a remote area in China with the cholera oubreak in 1920s, a spouse encounters some marital conflicts, which lead them into a great romance through a journey that touches your humanity side. The storyline is actually a bit typical in my country ( a lot of romance Indonesian movies have this kind of storyline.). I am in love with the musical background too. I think the piano solo really gives emotional feelings to the movie. With a little bit of flasback, I was a bit in tears already when the movie just started. And I was more in tears at the end:-(. I'd say "The Painted Veil" also displays some cultural background of Chinese in the earlier time around 1920s ( or maybe the culture I saw in the movie is still firmly believed by the Chinese).

I just don't feel satisfied with the ending! but in some points the ending is also very relieving; the loyalty is finaly there in her heart and mind!.( if you are lost, then you've got to see "The Painted Veil", then you might know what I mean by "Loyalty" here.)

Here are some of my favorite quotes taken from the movie:
Walter Fane : I knew when I married you that you were selfish and spoiled. But I loved you. I knew you only married me to get as far away from your mother as possible. And I hoped that one day... there'd be something more. I was wrong. You don't have it in you.

Kitty Fane: If a man hasn't what's necessary to make a woman love him then it's *his* fault not hers.

Walter Fane: Either way. Tomorrow morning we are to leave for Mei-tan-fu, or I shall file my petition.

Kitty Fane: Walter, you can't be serious about taking me into the middle of a cholera epidemic.

Walter Fane: Do you think that I'm not?

Kitty Fane: My God. That's what you want isn't it? Do you really think Charlie will let you do this?

Walter Fane: I don't think Charlie has very much to say about it.

Kitty Fane: Everything you said is true. Everything. I married you even though I didn't love you. But you knew that. Aren't you as much to blame for what's happened as I?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie Townsend: Women are always under the impression that men love them more that they really do.
Kitty Fane: I wouldn't delude myself for a second that you were in love with me.
Charlie Townsend: Now there you're wrong.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kitty Fane: For God's sake, Walter, will you stop punishing me? Do you absolutely despise me?
Walter Fane: No. I despise myself.
Kitty Fane: Why?
Walter Fane: For allowing myself to love you once.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kitty Fane: It's raining cats and dogs.
Kitty Fane: I said it's raining cats and dogs.
Walter Fane: Yes, I heard you.
Kitty Fane: You might have answered.
Walter Fane: I suppose I'm not used to speaking unless I've something to say.
Kitty Fane: If people only spoke when they had something to say, the human race would soon lose the power of speech
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walter Fane: Do you like flowers?
Kitty Fane: Not particularly, no. Well, I mean yes, but we don't really have them around the house. Mother says, "Why purchase something you can grow for free?" Then, we don't really grow them either. It does silly really. To put all that effort into something that's just going to die.

Note from me about this line " I think this really shows the ending is."

My favorite scene is when Kitty wanted her husband to pass the salt. It does really shows Kitty's characters

Happy Watching, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

It was the 715th anniversary of my city, Surabaya yesterday. "Sparkling Surabaya" becomes the motto of the anniversary, which means the city was enlightened by colorful lights. It was totally crowded that night when I went out. Okay, I didn't went out to celebrate the anniversary, yet to meet up someone, one of multipliers in my contact. Having an account in Multiply gives you some advantages and of course disadvantages, yet I won't talk about the disadvantages ones.

1. You are used to writing, expressing your thoughts ( hopefully in an appropriate manner) and sharing things  with the ones you trust. Or I should say you are free to write anything you want ( but be wise, I guess) have you ever heard a saying " Sometimes it is wise not to tell" ? so, it's all up to you whether or not you wanna speak out aloud to public.

2. Having new acquaintances, and if you click they might be your friends, even best friends.

3. Learning new things from people either those who share the same languages or who don't share the same languages as you ( if you get contacts from different countries)

Those are just some

Let's back to what happened last night; I met up with a contact ( another multiplier in my contact list) Mbak Lia from Jakarta. (I have already met some of my contacts though.) but we didn't take photos, I guess we were too busy to eat and talk?

To me, it's always great to get the chance to meet new people; you learn something about them and you learn something about yourself too. So I guess, it's not something wrong to express my heartfelt appreciation to those who put a smile on my face, is it?. Thanks Mbak Lia ( semoga semua baik2 aja disana ya mbak Lia)

Here are some of my "Kopdar"

http://luluone.multiply.com/photos/album/75/Postingan_Sambung_Menyambung

http://luluone.multiply.com/photos/album/78/Black_And_White_Went_Out_Together_Edisi_Kopdar_

and few others, but we didn't take any pictures.

Okay then I will leave you with today's theme song. I won't get bored to tell if you know the song, come on sing along!

"When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother what would I be? Will I be pretty? will I be rich, here's what she says to me; quee serra2 ( hmm while singing, I am wondering how to spell the words) whatever will be will be"

Addendum:

"Kopdar" is an abbreviation of "Kopi Darat" a term used to mean a meeting with people whom you only know offline then you decide to meet them face to face. This is the funny thing, literally kopi means Coffee while Darat means Land, Can you imagine Coffee and Land put together and become new phrase and meaning? Perhaps this is because of the habit people do while meeting; they drink coffee while talking. These abbreviated words are common here; people get used to combining two words together, one of the example is "kopdar" tell me if you are interested in any other examples. Perhaps this habit becomes more and more common as cellphones and texting are also becoming more and more usual. ( Is this some kind of breakthrough in linguistics? well, that needs research in depth, hehehe)

Love and much love

IS IT ONLY YOU?

Oh, what a bore

a room with no door

surrounded by white wall

There isn't even any sunflower

Oh what a bore

a room with no music

Soul music that touches your thoughts

Indeed it is such a bore

For you are there, yet not your soul

For you are there, yet your  mind's captured

Being captured by your ego and selfishness

What a bore

If life means only YOU AND YOU and nothing more

Finally, I managed to finish reading this book after some years it had been lying on my bookshelf. A story that is based on the author's experiences as a psychotherapist who deals with children with mental disorder. Sheile,a student of the author, a little girl who endures difficult times of her life since she was four, is told here in the book; after all the book is all about her. Sheila is said to have mental disorder as she ever burned a three-year-old boy when she was six. The boy could have been killed if no one had noticed what she had done. This book is a story of Sheila's life, how the author handled her from she was six until she had been a grown up woman. To me, Sheila's life is really painful and Hayden managed to make cry. She writes in such detailed that I felt like knowing Sheila in my life and I can learn something from both Sheila and Hayden. There are some moments which make me numb for sometimes, there are some moments in the story which make me laugh. Yet, the storyline is tend to be monotonous; almost the same cases told in every chapter. Honestly, the ending of Sheila, is quite suprising. I was about to rate 2 or even 3, yet the ending so suprising that I changed my mind; I rate them 4 and I really recommend you the book.

I rarely rate novels 5 stars, yet this one deserves to get 5. A novel by Anita Shreve “Strange Fits of Passion” is so absorbing a story that you simply can’t put the novel down until you finish reading it at one time. A story of a turbulent tragic story of domestic abuse. A woman who is sentenced to a life prison for a first degree murder she did for self-defense against her brutal husband. Unlike other novels that use a lot of “I” and seem to have only one character speaking and playing role the whole story, this novel is different and to tell you the truth the kind of writing she uses in this novel Strange Fits of Passion is new to me. Anita Shreve does not write her novel “Strange Fits of Passion” based on chapters of accidents, yet she writes the story as if you were reading memoirs or testimonials from people who are directly or indirectly related to the main character, so sometimes there are some flashbacks. It is not only ONE character who speaks, yet MORE than ONE. There is even the Reading Group Guide Inside; in this Guide, there are some questions about each character who testifies on Mary Amesbury alias Maureen English. The story might be just usual story, yet the way Anita Shreve tells it to the world make it unusual story and become an interesting story to read. To me, this is a really impressive style of writing that brings to an excellent story, a powerful portrait of truth and deception.

Saudara sebangsa setanah air,  apa kabar?, saya hanya ingin  berbagi tulisan karya Kahlil Gibran diambil dari buku Nyanyian Bunga. Setahun silam saya membagi "Nyanyian Bunga" (click)

KEARIFAN

Dirangkum dari buku "Song of Flower" Kahlil Gibran

And a man said , Speak to us of Self-Knowledge. And he answered, saying :

Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days  and the nights. But your ears thirst of the sound of your heart's knowledge.

You  would know in words that which you have always  known in thought. You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams. And it is well you should. The hidden-well spring of your soul must needs rise and murmuring to the sea; and the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes. But let there be no scales to weight your unknown treasure; And seek not the depths of your knowledge  with staff or sounding line. For self  is a sea boundless and measureless.

Say not " I have found the truth", but rather " I have found a truth." Say not " I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, " Ihave met the soul walking upon my path."

For the soul walks  upon all paths. The soul wlaks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed. The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

Taken from "The Prophet" English version by Kahlil Gibran.

Genre: Childrens Books
Author:Enid Blyton
Ada 8 koleksi dan setiap koleksi ada sekitar 5 sampai 6 cerita pendek yang sangat bisa diambil hikmahnya oleh anak-anak (orang dewasa juga bisa). 8 koleksi itu aadalah;
1. Si Baby Ungu dan cerita-cerita lain - The Purple Pig and other stories.
2. Si Gadis Penakut dan cerita-cerita lain - The coward Girl and other stories
3. Monyet Mike - Mike the Monkey
4. Tommy Si Pengadu - Tommy the Bully
5. Tiga Permintaan - Three Wishes
6.Cermin Ajaib - A Magical Mirror
7. Si Gadis Kaya yang Sombong - The Rich and Arrogant Girl
8. Anak Dalam Cermin - Boys in the Mirror

Enid Blyton's books I have are simple ( the Indonesian version). The books I have only give simple illustration yet the stories are indeed interesting to read. There are many moral values can be taken from the books. The moral values are explained through interesting stories with great characters. The stories empower children to imagine the scenes and create their way of thinking related to the stories, so that the moral values can be absorbed easily and enjoyably. Then later, they are able to retell the stories. There are 8 mini collections of Enid I have.( the titles are listed above ; read above). Each book is added by at least 4 or 5 other stories.
Some stories written by Blyton are possibly to happen in a real life, yet some are just too imaginative, but I guess it does not matter that much since moral values such as the importance of respecting others, using time effectively, being thankful for what we have already had, being well-organized since young, having self-respect, being humble and many more are still kept in her stories. Reading her stories had given me so much pleasure that I felt like being in an amazing world.

I am not sure the books I have are republished since it has been such a long time that I have not found any in the bookstores here. Choosing reading materials for children is not an easy issue; choose books which you consider are appropriate for reading sources. It is all your decision. Be wise as your children are your treasure. Anyhow, I do hope this information will be useful.

Tadi berangkat kerja, belum dapet postcardnya. Taopi habis pulang kerja sore tadi, eh udah ada dimeja. My mum said it arrived around 4 P.M when I was at work. Aku seneng banget ternyata dari Mbak Ning lagi dan masih tentang tempat tinggalnya and tempat favoritenya, Scarborough, Clock Cafe, Spa and South Bay. Makasih mbak Ning...oh and thanks to Princess Khansa too.

Aku terbang kesana,

Lukisan sang Maha Kaya,

Pantai berombak ceria,

Dua sejoli tersenyum menebar cinta,

Aku ada disana bersama dia,

Suatu saat, saat sayap terkepak

Disana bersama cinta,

I can’t stop reading until I finish it. I can’t wait to know the ending.” memang sih bukan kisah nyata tetapi jalan ceritanya bagus dan lain dari pada yang lain.

“WOW”, “aww, that’s so touching!”, “Phew! Finally”. Those might be the first impression of this novel. I bought it December 20th, 2005. Honestly, it was the cover which made me buy this novel. I would say that Grand Avenue is a touching story. What people say about this novel is true, no doubt that you can’t stop reading until you finish reading it and you can’t wait to know the ending either. I encountered that myself when reading Grand Avenue. Believe it or not! I could manage to finish reading a 474-page novel in about two days. ( To me, that was kind of new that I managed to finish reading a novel in such a short time.). Grand Avenue is not based on a true story anyway, yet the storyline is quite different that any other novels I have ever read. Grand Avenue is located in Cincinnati and it is a story of four women who have been best friends since they were kids. Now that they have their own family and children, they are faced with complicated things that affect to their friendship ;betrayal of one of their best friends, marital affair, trial and custody, divorce, sexual harassment, unhappy marriages, and murder. Two of them have such perfect mariages while the other two have such miserable ones. 23 years after their friendship, two of them are killed violently and mysteriously. The murder is uncovered for some years until it is finally solved by one of the grandchildren of the four women few years later. I really should give big applause for Joy Fielding for putting such great words into such a great Grand Avenue.

Author:William Shakespeare
This is a must-read book. This is a story of "quartet" who were somehow separated by calamity. Anthipolus of Ephesus and Anthipolus of Syracuse and also their loyal servants who are also separated-twins; Dromio of Ephesus and Dromio of Syracuse. The misunderstandings about whom meet whom leads to hilarious events.Other supporting characters as a wife, a sister, parents and courtezan enlightens the story-line. I agree with the introduction in the book says " You will never stop reading until you reach the last page." The more I read it the more I like it. I didn't want to put it away until I finished reading it. The conflicts among characters continues to raise and they have to face more confusions every time Anthipolus of Ephesus meets Dromio of Syracuse and vice versa. You want to laugh out aloud? Read this Shakespeare's illustrated classic. You won't be sorry! so this deserves to get the highest rating!
