There are indeed lots of movies I have watched; either Indonesian or foreign ones.Yet, I seldom put up movies on my reviews if they do not leave any impressions to me at all.

"The Painted Veil" is one of the most endearing romance movies ever. It is based on the novel of Somerset Maugham. Taking a set mostly in Shanghai and a remote area in China with the cholera oubreak in 1920s, a spouse encounters some marital conflicts, which lead them into a great romance through a journey that touches your humanity side. The storyline is actually a bit typical in my country ( a lot of romance Indonesian movies have this kind of storyline.). I am in love with the musical background too. I think the piano solo really gives emotional feelings to the movie. With a little bit of flasback, I was a bit in tears already when the movie just started. And I was more in tears at the end:-(. I'd say "The Painted Veil" also displays some cultural background of Chinese in the earlier time around 1920s ( or maybe the culture I saw in the movie is still firmly believed by the Chinese).

I just don't feel satisfied with the ending! but in some points the ending is also very relieving; the loyalty is finaly there in her heart and mind!.( if you are lost, then you've got to see "The Painted Veil", then you might know what I mean by "Loyalty" here.)

Here are some of my favorite quotes taken from the movie:
Walter Fane : I knew when I married you that you were selfish and spoiled. But I loved you. I knew you only married me to get as far away from your mother as possible. And I hoped that one day... there'd be something more. I was wrong. You don't have it in you.

Kitty Fane: If a man hasn't what's necessary to make a woman love him then it's *his* fault not hers.

Walter Fane: Either way. Tomorrow morning we are to leave for Mei-tan-fu, or I shall file my petition.

Kitty Fane: Walter, you can't be serious about taking me into the middle of a cholera epidemic.

Walter Fane: Do you think that I'm not?

Kitty Fane: My God. That's what you want isn't it? Do you really think Charlie will let you do this?

Walter Fane: I don't think Charlie has very much to say about it.

Kitty Fane: Everything you said is true. Everything. I married you even though I didn't love you. But you knew that. Aren't you as much to blame for what's happened as I?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie Townsend: Women are always under the impression that men love them more that they really do.
Kitty Fane: I wouldn't delude myself for a second that you were in love with me.
Charlie Townsend: Now there you're wrong.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kitty Fane: For God's sake, Walter, will you stop punishing me? Do you absolutely despise me?
Walter Fane: No. I despise myself.
Kitty Fane: Why?
Walter Fane: For allowing myself to love you once.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kitty Fane: It's raining cats and dogs.
Kitty Fane: I said it's raining cats and dogs.
Walter Fane: Yes, I heard you.
Kitty Fane: You might have answered.
Walter Fane: I suppose I'm not used to speaking unless I've something to say.
Kitty Fane: If people only spoke when they had something to say, the human race would soon lose the power of speech
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walter Fane: Do you like flowers?
Kitty Fane: Not particularly, no. Well, I mean yes, but we don't really have them around the house. Mother says, "Why purchase something you can grow for free?" Then, we don't really grow them either. It does silly really. To put all that effort into something that's just going to die.

Note from me about this line " I think this really shows the ending is."

My favorite scene is when Kitty wanted her husband to pass the salt. It does really shows Kitty's characters

Happy Watching, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Category:Movies
Genre: Documentary
Last night, Euro 2008 began. I was expecting the complete show of the opening ceremony, but it turned out to be only 20 minutes shown on TV. While I was waiting for the first match to begin ( I am not much into football, I watch it when I want to) I switched the channel and watch this movie.

I was wondering what kind of movie it was, yet I found the word "Krakatoa" when a map was shown in the movie, then I know it was a movie about "The Eruption of Krakatao ( now it is spelled "Krakatau"- the most active volcano still if I am not mistaken). This docudrama is indeed great. Apart from the fact that it was such a terrible moment that I am sure it will never be forgotten by many, the special effect is quite good.

The massive explosion, which could be heard 3,000 miles from Krakatau and killed almost 36,000 people is described clearly in the movie. The scenes of the hot ash covered the island, the tidal wave and the eruption itself are able to get you the idea of how massive the explosion was.

May all the people died in the Krakatau Tragedy ( 1883) find peace. And those who try to document this event be blessed by happiness and health. Amin

This docudrama was produced by BBC in 2006.

Here are some comments on the movie ( taken from http://imdb.com):

1. A fact-based account of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait near Java, an Indonesian island. The eruption and its effects (including tsunamis and a super-hot ash cloud) took over 36,000 lives. The story follows several characters throughout the ordeal, including a Dutch official, his family, and his native clerk; a ship captain, his passengers and crew; a lighthouse keeper and his family; and a Dutch scientist in Indonesia to study the regions volcanoes. Included are narrations from diaries and journals of the survivors. The special effects are pretty good for a film of its kind, and unlike most made-for-TV fare, this docudrama actually has some good acting.

2. This is an excellent account of the events surrounding the eruption of the volcano at Krakatoa and the devastation that followed. Taken from the diaries of survivors it demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the instinct for survival when this destructive force of nature is unleashed upon them. There are so many poignant moments - the bravery of the ship's captain as he battled the tsunami, the mother who thought she had reached safety only to suffer a cruel blow in the aftermath of the tragedy and the woman who left her home to look for her dog - a decision which saved her life.Great acting, special effects and direction - unmissable

3. The lighthouse featured in this gets destroyed by a huge tidal wave and we see how a ship copes on the rough seas. Luckily, all survive. The special effects in this are fantastic, especially the scenes where Krakatoa is erupting.

For another version of this disaster, I recommend 1969's Krakatoa, East of Java with Maximilian Schell and Diane Baker.

! phew finally  my internet works properly. But I shall instal everything, oh my!! from Skype, even I don't use that often only for language learning purposes, my YM, and everything. On Sundays, I watched a movie on TV about a boy, who lives in a remote area in Papua. There is no such thing of schools in remote areas in Papua. Schools aren't considered being the most important things in life. You life, you grow up for your tribe, your family, that's all that matter. ( Siapa aja yang dari Papua, kasih tahu kalu salah ya.)

Denias, the Papuan boy, has strong will to "break" the old tradition that says the boy in remote areas life for his tribe, and family; he wants to achieve career, he wants to go to school to study. He struggles to get ahead in life, to be accepted in a school. This story is based on a true story of Papuan boy, who is now has successful life, and good education.

This movie, to some people, is considered idealistic, hmm, I skip the question whether or not it is.

Apart from the story, I like the settings, which take place in a remote area in Papua; so beautiful. In one of the photos, you can see rainbow, right? This reminds me of the rainbow I saw here in Surabaya a couple days ago after a short rain. Sadly! I did not take my dcam with me.

I don't want to spill the bean, but some lines in the movie are indeed funny ( well according to Indonesians) - as I have written somewhere in this blog that comedy is interpreted differently by people, especially those who don't share the same languages.

Ini scene favor saya

Denias : Pak, maaf, bisa tolong saya!

TNI      : Iya

Denias : Taukah Bapak, Maleo. Saya ingin bertemu dengan Maleo

TNI      : Ada banyak Maleo disini. yang mana?

Denias : Maleo guru saya

TNI      : Ya siapa namanya?

Denias :Maleo

Ternyata Maleo adalah nama kesatuan TNI

Well, I guess this blog is just a reopening blog of mine after some times I had been dealing with the broken hardware, and connection!.

Okay, meanwhile let me sing today's theme song. If you know the song, let's sing! dare to doit?

"Somewhere over the rainbow way up high. There's a land  that I heard of once in a lullaby"

I think this is the kind of movie that's worth watching; selain buat hiburan, juga memperkenalkan budaya Indonesia yang beraneka ragam ( Indonesia bukan hanya Jawa kan?) ya semoga ini mengurangi gerakan separatis lah setidaknya. Anyway, the movie is just great

Meanwhile let me sing the theme song for today " I remember all the things we shared, I remember all the laughter we shared, all the stories.." by Mocca ( Indonesian Band)

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Entertaining as well as inspirative ( in the case of writing songs). Even some sayings are sung but this is not a musical movie. Watching this movie does not really make you think hard as the storyline is simple, yet great. A story of a used-to-be-famous singer , Alex( Huge Grant) who tries to gain his popularity by taking the offer of writing songs for a famous singer. Being helped by a to-do-plant "maid" Sophia (Drew Barrimore), Alex writes songs. I'd say that this movie is not THAT romantic; there is no such thing of candle light dinner, spending time together while watching the moon, saying some super dupper romantic lines. You will not find all those things there, yet this what makes this movie somehow becomes romantic. Some sayings are sung by Huge Grant and the lyrics are simple. The piano playing has made this movie becomes fun to watch. There is a strong reason why I put this on a review! you might be able to guess, no? okay it is because of the song " Way Back Into Love" ( all I wanna do is find a way back into love...); the song goes over my head up to now. Okay, I do not want to spill the beans, you have got to see it.

some of my favourite quotes:
Alex Fletcher: [Sophie moves a chair] What are you doing, you madwoman, you're wrecking my apartment!
Sophie Fisher: Well, I can't write sitting all the way across the room.
Alex Fletcher: No, go back to your corner!
Sophie Fisher: ...Fine, all right.
[goes, leaving the chair where she moved it]
Alex Fletcher: I'm blocked. How am I supposed to get out?
Sophie Fisher: Go out the other side.
Alex Fletcher: But... but... I've never been out the other side.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex Fletcher: Just a little bit louder, because this song is intended for humans, okay? Way Back Into Love, take two.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex Fletcher: It doesn't have to be perfect. Just spit it out. They're just lyrics.
Sophie Fisher: "Just lyrics"?
Alex Fletcher: Lyrics are important. They're just not as important as melody.
Sophie Fisher: I really don't think you get it.
Alex Fletcher: Oh. You look angry. Click your pen.
Sophie Fisher: A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. Sex.
Alex Fletcher: I so get that.
Sophie Fisher: But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the two that makes it magical.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex Fletcher: [singing] It's never been easy for me / To find words to go along with a melody / But this time there's actually something on my mind / So please forgive these few brief awkward lines / Ever since I met you my life has changed / It's more than just my furniture you've rearranged / I was living in the past / But somehow you've brought me back / And I haven't felt this way / Since before Frankie said "Relax" / And though I know / Based on my track record / I might not seem like the safest bet / All I'm asking you / Is don't write me off just yet / For years I've been telling myself the same old stories / That I was happy to live off my so-called former glories / But you've given me a reason / To take another chance / Now I need you / Despite the fact that you've killed all my plants / And though I know / I've already blown more chances / Than anyone should ever get / All I'm asking you / Is don't write me off just yet. --- this is sung by Huge Grant with the piano playing as I have mentioned earlier

Die Hard! Bruce Willis! Yippi-kay-ay!! are three things which can't be separated. Even though this is typical American movie, I should put two thumbs up for Die Hard starting from the first sequel up to the last one ( Die Hard 4 : Life Free or Die Hard).
Speaking of the story line, I think Die Hard 4 somehow is not that different from the previous sequel Die Hard 1, 2, 3. This is still about some people who once worked in the government and want some credit and demand for some amount of money to stop the global virtual sabotage. McClane's daughter happens to be in the wrong place and time as she finally becomes the hostage of the saboteurs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thomas Gabriel: I'm doing the Country a favour... But the question is, is the Country willing to pay for it?" ( a quote from the movie) ------- shows "It's all about the money."

Secondly, Bruce as John McClane has always got unique partners. This time, a computer internet geek, Justin Long plays as Matthew farrel becomes his partner in saving John's daughter. This time, in my opinion, McClane somehow acts more like a Daddy who wants to save the daughter rather than the super hero country.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[from trailer]
Matt Farrell: What're you gonna do?
John McClane: I'm gonna go kill this guy and get my daughter. Or go get my daughter and kill this guy. Or kill all of 'em!
-----------------------------( another quote ) shows he acts more like a daddy than a super hero or something like that.

Die Hard 4 is still about What I really like in the movie is that I do not think I remember there are the "F" word or any smiliar words which are said clearly, at least not too often. Secondly, when they want to "steal" a car and McClane uses the old way to start the car; cutting some wires while the young geek uses the modern way to start the car.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt Farrell: Seriously, when was the last time you ever turned on the radio to listen to popular music? 70's, 80's
----------------------------( another quote) shows different generation between McClane and partner.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John McClane: [after covering a webcam] Freddy, can you trace these guys.
Thomas Gabriel: Detective, covering the camera does not turn off the microphone
---------------------------------------- ( another quote) shows McClane does not know much about the internet and something virtual.

Curious?? You should watch then!

Speaking of the acting of Bruce himself, I'd say that he can always play his character well. The different is that his character this time is much quieter than before; I guess this is because he is already a daddy of a teenage girl, Lucy McClane played by Mary Elizabeth W. At the end, this is what I like and I still remember the first time I watched the sequel that is the word "Yippikayay!!" said by the main character at the end of the "adventure"

However, I do have some critics in this movie that is about the soundstrack which is not really shown here. Anyway, I think this is already too much of babbling. So, I'd say this is a must-see movie just for fun though. We'll see whether or not we have different opinions! Ciao!

Genre: Romance
Romantic movies are almost the same! So far I have only found few romantic movies which are good and deserve to get 5 stars. To me this movie is different. I enjoyed it! Honestly, the story did not make me cry, yet I felt warm and happy. How would you feel if you are felt like being bounded to someone whom you never meet or see the face? This is about waiting, patience, trust, sacrificing and above all it is about LOVE. "Oh, she is so beautiful.", "Oh he is so handsome." NO, this is not about physical look that they fall in love with, yet connection they feel when communicating through magical letters they send in their magical mailboxes ( as I prefer saying so) at different times; 2004 and 2006. The quote I like in the movie is that when Alex wrote on a wall along a busy street"Thanks for our beautiful evening together." ( don't know what I mean? you must watch it then.) and when Kate tried to stop Alex seeing her "If you love me do not see me, if you love me please wait 2 years from now, if you love me please meet me two years later in the lake.I will be there.".( Watch it if you are getting curious about what I mean.)

If someone watched this movie said "Oh this movie is just too imaginative. Time-travel is impossible." That's true Time-travel is impossible to happen in a real life ( at least that's what I know), yet this movie offers something different; An unusual romantic story. I did not care how they could get letters while they were separated by different years, but what I cared the most was that whether they would be together at the end, whether the destiny would unite them, whether they were strong enough to wait for a period of time until they were united at the end.

If the movie did not end like anyhappy-ending movies should end ( being together) it would be so tragic. But this one is different, I guess the movie does not emphasize on what is impossible or possible to happen, but the movie sends messages that sometimes you have to wait to meet your soulmate at the end, you have to believe and you have to trust your heart; trusting that he or she is the one then you should work on your relationship.

Keanu and Sandra can play their characters well; I think they they are soulmates on the movies. They get the chemistry there! This is such a beautiful movie I can recommend you to watch.

Okay shall we go to the soundtracks! I'd say old songs dominate the soundtracks, but they manage to create romantic atmosphere.

Hmm overall, this movie is beautiful and it has brought you to a deeper emotional feeling.

Iseng - my fav quotes -- hehe kurang kerjaan? biarin heeh

Kate: One man I can never meet. Him, I would like to give my whole heart to.

Alex: Don't give up on me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hostess: And when were you hoping to dine with us?
Alex: Two years from tomorrow.
Hostess: Two years from tomorrow?
Alex: Yeah.
Hostess: Two years?
Alex: From tomorrow.

[from trailer]
Alex: This house is about connections.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[from trailer]
Kate: [from trailer] Even though this is clearly impossible, it's amazing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[from trailer]
Alex: [voice over] How's your sunset?
Kate: It's perfect.
Alex: I only wish you were here to share it with me.
[from trailer]
Kate: I miss the Lake House. And its trees.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kate: How do you know it was me?
Alex: Long brown hair; gentle, unguarded eyes...
Kate: Okay, okay, you saw me.

Kate: It was you. Why didn't you tell me?
Alex: You would've thought I was crazy or drunk. Or both.

Alex: He could build a house. But he couldn't build a home.

Alex: I'm an architect. I like to build.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alex: I saw her. I kissed her. I love her
