Blog EntryOn Our Third DayAug 25, '07 11:05 AM
for everyone

sebenarnya masih lumayan foto yg dari Jogja hehe dasar turis Jepang ( asia) suka foto2 .. itu katanya lho. I was back to Surabaya already two weeks ago, hmm August 17th. but I just wanted to keep the stories and photos not only in my mind but also here.

I think on the third week, we visited Affandi museum. Affandi was one of the most famous Indonesian painter ever. The location of the little museum is a bit difficult to trace as it is near to jalan solo if I am not mistaken. Jalan solo is not only a name of a street; jalan solo is jalan (street) that links Jogja to Solo ( a city).

Having come to the place, we direcly went to the first gallery where some of Affandi's most famous paintings are displayed. In the first room, there is also his antique car displayed there. It has been modified though. I admire some of his paintings, which describe his deepest feelings about his wife and family. Near the first room, there are the tombs of Affandi and his wife; my cousin took the photo! but I tend not to post it here; it is not that I am afraid or something like that, but well I guess posting such things are not my thing, if you know what I mean. Speaking of the decoration, I'd say it is simple but quite nice. We actually expected that the museum would be much and much better than this.

The second gallery is where the paintings of Affandi's wife are displayed. I'd say his wife was also very talented and had a bit different taste compared to Affandi. There are also some paintings of Indonesian children when they joined "In Memory of Affandi" painting competitions; very nice. They are even sold with reasonable prices. Oh sorry I also need to mention that 1700 out of 2000 Affandi's paintings are sold

On the second floor in the second gallery, there is a circular stair that brings us to upper part of the building. It's pretty nice looking at the view of the street up here. In front of it; there is a big old tree, but I'd say it looks artistic. Near the stairs there is a cafe called cafe loteng where you can sit and relax there, but we did not relax there as we still had some places to visit.

What we expect that we hope this museum is NOT only a museum, but it is something like our appreciations to the outstanding Indonesian painter that had brought Indonesia to the international ( European countries). Personally, I hope this museum will be reconstructed into more architectural building, so many people want to drop by and learn at least a little bit ( better than nothing) Thanks to my cousin who has shown us this place! Photo will folllow if you dont get bored!!

for everyone

Perhaps, only few who know that this temple DOES exist. It is located up the hill of Jogja. We felt lucky that we managed to visit

this temple. Thank you so very much to my cousin who showed this temple to us.

The "unknown" temple is located in Sambirejo Village. That's why we call the temple Sambirejo temple. There are many temples in this village, and we only visited some. II call it "unknown" as it is not mentioned in the travel-guide book from www.lonelyplanet.com Indonesian version. (the book is popular among tourists who want to explore Indonesia.)

When we went there, a villager came to us and asked us to fill the "guestbook". Having read the guestboook, I was a bit surprised knowing that there have been quite many visitors ever visited this temple, but mostly they are from abroad. I guess they are some hikers as the location of the temple is really up the hill, so I can understand that sometimes people feel lazy to visit this temple.

Iinside the temple, you can see a water-fountain look alike thing, perhaps thousands years ago, people in the era used it to gather some water. According to many people and my cousin too, people in the era used yolk to join one stone to another stone. Phew! that must have been a lot of work. What kind of technology they used? nobody knows. I'd say "simple" technolog in my era, yet "modern" in their time.

Overall, the temple is in a quite good condition. The surrounding seems to be well maintained. Looking Jogja city in the temple is possible and it gives you an amazing view of Jogja city.

I am not sure whether Kesultanan- Hamengkubuwono knows this temple, perhaps he does. There are many unknown temples in Jogja. I'd say that Jogja is called a thousand-temple city as there are many temples can be found here in Jogja. Have you ever wondered how they managed to build such strong temples??

Should you neeed any information about how to get to this temple. PM me!

RAMAYANA BALLET

Malioboro, Sultan's Palace ( keraton Jogja) are all identical to Jogja.

Hanum         : Oh, yes I have been to Jogja

Brandstoetter: Oh where have you been?

Hanum         : Malioboro, Sultan's palace, and two must-see temples - Hindu and Buddhist temples.

Brandstoetter : Hmm, have you seen Ramayana Ballet?

Hanum : What's that?

Okay, the conversation above is just an illustration of a person who has been in Jogja, but has never seen Ramayana Ballet.

If you think Jogja is only Prambanan and Borobudur temples then you might need to go back to Prambanan once again. This is not only a temple;I'd say the greatest temple and the most beautiful one, but this is where Ramayana Ballet is performed every Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Ramayana Ballet, a story adopted from India but performed in a Javanese dancing with a great Karawitan playing ( karawitan - a musical performance with a set of Javanese musical instruments called gamelan.) is worth seeing. The story of Rama Shinta performed beautifully with the background of Prambanan Temple that is seen clearly as some lights are located near the temple.

Entering the main entrance you will be welcomed by a friendly usher wearing a complete Javanese attire who will make sure that you find your seats. Some seats are available; VIP seats ( sofa seats), and special ( stone with cushions seats). I'd say sitting on a stone with cushion seat is more comfortable than sitting on a sofa. Entering the Prambanan area, there is a box filled with booklets about Ramayana Story provided in 6 different languages such as; English, Indonesian, French, Deutsch, Dutch, Spanish and Italian. But, do not expect too much with the foreign languages as some languages are not grammatically written.

Taking pictures is allowed during the performance. Only that each camera is charged Rp. 2000. I guess this is okay as this is a part of a maintenance of the temple too. As you might  know that the temple has been severly damaged because of the earthquake. I guess 2000 IDR means nothing compared to having this temple forever. So, I do not really complain too much about paying this and that.

During the performance, many foreigners use this moment to take some photos. According to many people, the performance is really great. The last time I went there, it got long applause.

After the performance, you are given 5 minutes to take some photos with the dancers. We used the chance though, but we did not get the chance to take some photos with Sita, the Princess.

There is even a ten-minute coffee break, then you can exchange your coupons with soft drinks depending on the price of the tickets you buy.  Near the coffee break area, which is outdoor, you can enjoy the karawitan playing. You can enjoy your ten-minutes break ( sorry I forgot to take some photos) while listening karawitan.

Some people I met said that after having watched the performance, they are in love with Gamelan. Many of them decide to buy CDs of gamelan or Karawitan ( sinden version). If you want to buy some gamelan CDs, a CD store in Malioboro Plaza is the right place. The thing I regret is that I did not even buy the gamelan CDs!! aarrrghh!!!

These are some of my suggestions if you want to go there to see Ramayana Ballet / after watching it;

1. Read the booklet before watching it.

2. Take special seats is not a bad idea at all.

3. Find information about when and what time it is played. ( it is usually at 7:30 PM)

4. Arrive there 45 minutes before as you can see the preparation of Ramayana Ballet plus have dinner nearby.

5. It is more beautiful if you see the performance during the full moon.

6. To make your memory of Jogja last, buy gamelan Cds.

This is what I can write about Ramayana Ballet. May this information be useful for your trip to Jogja. Should you need any information, PM me! I will be your online tour-guide exploring the beauty of Jogja.
